Example Projects
CERCLA Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study Training
Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation
EI developed and conducted a training course for the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation (Colville Tribes) that described the US Environmental Protection Agency's remedial investigation/feasibility study (RI/FS) process, including details on human health and ecological risk assessments. EI taught the course to Tribal personnel responsible for areas relevant to the RI/FS process. Topics included the Colville Tribes' hazardous waste program, the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) regulatory framework, steps in an RI/FS, risk assessment theory and practice, and the potential for coordinating an RI/FS with a natural resource damage assessment. The Upper Columbia River site was used as a case study for the trainings. EI summarized the results of a risk screening analysis conducted on existing fish tissue data from the area as a way to explain the risk assessment process and outputs. EI also illustrated how, when and where Colville Tribe staff could fit into the RI/FS process when tribal resources are involved.
Environmental Law, Institutional Capacity Building, Environmental Compliance and Enforcement
USAID
In the Dominican Republic, EI staff provided training to raise the level of public and community awareness surrounding environmental issues and environmental regulatory requirements. EI assisted with the development of voluntary compliance initiatives and environmental enforcement of regulations to improve environmental performance. The ISO 14000 standard for Environmental Management Systems was used as a voluntary mechanism to achieve continuous environmental improvement. EI staff worked closely with the US District Attorney's Office developing and coordinating approaches to environmental compliance by providing advice on domestic and international environmental law. EI's work strengthened the institutional capacity of the District Attorney's Office by building a national environmental enforcement program in coordination with other government agencies.
