Env. Management Systems and ISO 14001

Overview

An environmental management system (EMS) is a powerful tool to help businesses, governments and universities successfully meet today's financial and environmental challenges. EMSs help businesses chart a clear course to competitive advantage with strategies that improve their financial, environmental and social bottom lines. Governments and universities reap benefits of EMSs through improved control, reduced operating costs and strenghtened environmental performance.

As one of the eminent EMS firms in the Pacific Northwest, EI has a highly experienced team that can help you select the right approach to development of your organization’s management system, whether it be the internationally recognized and accepted ISO 14001, the Natural Step or other frameworks. Our team has provided EMS assistance to clients within diverse business sectors and all levels of government.

EI's experts bring to bear outstanding cross-disciplinary training in environmental science and engineering, financial and business management, and law. The EI team includes two of the first specialists in the United States to be certified by the Registrar Accreditation Board as ISO 14001 Lead Auditors and is well qualified to pave the way for a worry-free and successful ISO 14001 certification.

Example Projects

EMS Implementation Training

US Department of Veterans Affairs

EI developed and presented a federal facility workshop on EMS design and implementation for the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in California. EI provided three two-day trainings on EMS implementation to VA staff who were implementing EMSs to meet EO 13148 mandates. For these trainings, EI developed interactive mechanisms of instruction to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and presented real word experiences as examples to make the training more practical and help clarify difficult concepts or areas of confusion. The courses included a slide show explaining the ins and outs of EMS planning and implementation, a question and answer exchange between the trainer and attendees, and group activities for the attendees to put into practice material presented in the slide show. The course and customized training materials developed for the course drew upon the instructor's considerable insight and real-life experience into the EMS implementation process at federal facilities.
