Example Projects
Technical Support Regarding Hazardous Waste Facility Cleanup and Closure
Georgetown Community Council
EI is working with the Georgetown Community Council regarding the clean-up and closure of a major hazardous waste treatment and storage facility in the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. EI's support includes reviewing and commenting on technical analyses, sampling plans, interim measure work plans, and facility assessments. Through a series of workshops and public meetings, EI is helping keep the community informed about assessment and remediation actions at the facility. On behalf of the community, EI meets with representatives of the Washington State Department of Ecology, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the responsible party (RP) regarding the status of the clean-up and closure. EI was able to push the responsible party to accelerate an interim remedial measure - installation of a slurry wall surrounding the worst soil contamination in order to reduce further contamination of groundwater. There are 49 contaminants of concern at the site, with the primary ones being volatile organic compounds, including vinyl chloride and benzene, in the groundwater and in indoor air. At the beginning of 2010, the Department released a Cleanup Action Plan for public comment.
Data Quality Management Support, Pacific Sound Resource Superfund Site
US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)
EI staff members provided data quality management support for the USACE Seattle District under a Hazardous, Toxics, and Radioactive Waste contract. EI's chemist used the USACE data review software and manual data validation to validate metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and pentachlorophenol (PCP) data and provide formatted data to the client for quarterly groundwater monitoring being conducted as part of the long-term Operations and Maintenance at the Pacific Sound Resources Superfund Site in Seattle, WA. EI's chemist provided the client with two data reports for each sampling event: a data validation report and quality control summary report, including using USACE's data processing tool and Environmental Data Management System software, to tabulate data based on project-specific queries.
